Book Review: The King by Skye Warren

Book Review: The King by Skye Warren

Hey babes! Is anyone else having issues with WordPress?! I had this post ready to go and scheduled. For some reason when it went up a couple of hours ago, it went back to an old revision. 😭 I lost part of my post. I guess that goes to show I really need to start backing up my posts!!

I have another book review for y’all! I have been reading like crazy lately! Lol. I received an advanced copy of The King by Skye Warren to review and I’m so excited to share this review with you!! I absolutely loved the Endgame series and was super intrigued by Damon!

Blurb

The highest stakes…

My father gambles every night, falling deeper and deeper into debt. When he hits the bottom, he places a new bet: his daughter. I’m his entry bet to the biggest underground poker game.

Every kind of danger circles the velvet-covered table, but only one man makes me tremble.

A trailer park princess.

The son of a criminal king.

We don’t belong together, but I’m caught in a twisted game.

His eyes meet mine with dark promise. And when he puts down his cards, I know I’m going to lose more than my body. I’m going to lose everything.

My Review!

This is the first book in a duet and a spinoff of the Endgame series that I reviewed a few months ago! If you loved that series, I think you’ll love this one! While it has a couple of the same scenes in Penny’s POV, it is a completely new book! I was intrigued by Damon in those books and was curious about Penny’s story. I’m so happy they gave them their own books! This book is broken up into two parts. Part 1 is the prologue and mostly set in the past. You can actually get it in a separate book, The Prince, for free right now! Part 2 is mostly in the present.

I loved getting to see how Penny and Damon met! It really was necessary for the story and to see how their lives developed. Penny is a 15 year old girl who had to grow up fast and take on more responsibility than a child should have to. Her father always seems to put her in these crazy situations. Damon had a horrific upbringing and is emotionally and physically scarred from it. With their pasts and present intertwining, all Damon has ever wanted is for Penny to be safe. This was a dark, twisted, exciting, sad, and emotional book! I can’t wait to see how their story unfolds in the second book, The Queen! Ohh and I so think Penny’s friend Jessica should get her own book! Her past seems really interesting! It’s safe to say that Skye Warren is one of my favorite authors!

An interesting premise for a plot. Stories like that are a whole lot less romantic set in modern day. Good for you mentioning the supporting characters too. They are often two dimensional and a well-constructed character tells us a lot about the skill of the writer.
